Entrepreneur Thomas B. Quaw founded Belgrade in 1882. Quaw liked the land that he found along the newly surveyed Northern Pacific Railway and decided to start a community. Since its founding, Belgrade has grown slowly but surely and many of its residents are long-time local families who have a strong loyalty to their community.
Since the 1980s, Belgrade has been experiencing steady expansion and is now the fastest growing city in Montana. Local business people and community members are working together to attract new business to Belgrade. At the same time, the community has established itself as an independent community.
Today, National Parks exploration and winter sports bring over $400 million annually to the Gallatin Valley's economy. The unique combination of the region's strong community and the alpine environment, however, has proven to be even more flexible than traditional economic models based on tourism.
Gallatin Valley residents believe strongly that small, community oriented schools provide a stronger emotional and educational foundation for young students than larger, less personal settings. Belgrade High School consistently produces, well-rounded students that go on to learn at the local colleges and universities or top rated schools all across the country.
The Greater Yellowstone Ecosystem and the Gallatin, Madison and Bridger Mountains make the Gallatin Valley the ideal residence for big game hunters, anglers, mountaineers or anyone enthusiastic about the outdoors. Sportsmen are happy to discover that antelope, deer, elk bighorn sheep, moose, mountain goat, mountain lion and black bear are more abundant in the Greater Yellowstone area than any other region of the American Rockies. Upland game birds include grouse, partridge, pheasant and wild turkey to name a few. Second to none, the rivers near Belgrade are widely recognized as the standard by which blue-ribbon trout fishing is measured.
